A riddle. Name the material that…
- holds seven times its weight in water,
- had a year-long stint on the surface of NBA basketballs,
- and is made up of strands so small they’re measured in something called a “denier.”
Given the name of this post, you’ve probably guessed correctly: microfiber. It’s essentially a fabric made of synthetic strands that are so tiny and light, so full of miniature nooks and pores, that it cuts away at grease and dirt like a bunch of microscopic pickaxes, and absorbs it all like a sponge.
This is what the “denier” measurement indicates. A microfiber is any fiber that measures less than one denier, although the denier is actually more a measure of density than distance: it’s the weight in grams of a single 9,000-meter strand. That means a nearly six-mile strand of microfiber weighs less than a single paperclip.
Such a lack of density means that microfiber is largely empty, leaving plenty of space to absorb tiny particles of dust and oil.
So… what does this mean for our simplehuman stainless steel trash cans?
Say you’re baking a cake. Your can sits on the floor beside your countertop. You spend hours mixing and rolling and kneading and flattening, and by the end, your can has a visible dusting of flour on the lid. Should you pull out the sponges and spray bottles to clean it up?
Not necessary. As you know, stainless steel is already a cinch to clean—with microfiber, it’s even simpler. Just pick up your handy (get it?) microfiber mitt, wipe down the can with no soap or harmful chemicals, and voilà—your can is shiny and clean, long before your cake in the oven starts to rise.
Our microfiber mitt kit offers four different mitts with fibers tailored for use on particular surfaces: stainless steel, glass & mirrors, TV & computer, and general kitchen. We also sell a single, larger microfiber mitt for stainless steel, great for keeping your trash can shiny, along with all sorts of other stainless steel countertops and appliances. Each mitt has microfiber on one side; on the other is a fine terrycloth that you dampen with just a touch of water to give surfaces a preliminary scrub. This process means you can avoid harmful cleaning agents altogether—a big source of pollution.
Keep some mitts on hand at all times, and keep your kitchen polished to a high, chemical-free shine.
