Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth. In an ideal climate, it can grow up to two feet per day.

What’s more, it’s native to almost every continent on Earth—only Antarctica and Europe have no indigenous varieties of bamboo.

When we were in school, many of us simply imagined bamboo as panda food. Given its abundance, though, it’s no surprise that the material has become widely used—not only as food (for pandas and humans alike) but also as a building material with all sorts of applications.

As a construction material, bamboo’s chief advantages are that it’s lightweight, fibrous, and resilient. It has a strength rivaled only by much heavier lumber and highly manufactured metals and concrete. While nearly a billion people live in bamboo housing—many of them in Asia—bamboo’s advantages are only making their way slowly to North America. We now commonly see bamboo in contemporary architecture and furniture design.

At simplehuman, we’ve begun to incorporate bamboo into many of our products as well.

Not only is bamboo efficient and all-natural, but it also looks fantastic. We introduced bamboo accents into many of our products, which will be announced in the next few months. We also use bamboo in our knife block, which we added to many of our dishracks. The soft wood is gentle on blades and helps shield the knife while you load and unload dishes.

Since many of these bamboo products are constantly exposed to water, we treat our bamboo with a food-safe waterproof coating so it won’t begin to warp or split over time as untreated wood might. The waterproof coating keeps the bamboo looking fresh for years.

Our new bamboo bath ensemble features bamboo in abundance.

This week, we’re announcing a bamboo version of our pull-out cabinet organizers. Our new bamboo organizer uses the same commercial grade ball bearing track as our steel organizers, so they glide in and out of the cabinet smoothly and easily. The pre-welded tracks are easy to install (no need for a handyman). The organizers are a great way to eliminate clutter, and the bamboo aesthetic works nicely with both modern and traditional kitchen designs.

Take a look at our new organizers—and keep an eye out for our other forthcoming bamboo products—to see what bamboo can do for you. While you’re at it, check out this easy bamboo shoots recipe. You might soon be hooked on bamboo.

Happy organizing in the new year!
