When we hear the word coal, we don't exactly think of something beautiful or pure.  But that's exactly what sort of coal's white charcoal wares evoke–they're designed to be both beautiful and to purify the air we breathe at the same time.

Intrigued? I know I was when I first saw a picture of these elegant, black branches in a recent print issue of GOOD.

Hakutan or white charcoal can absorb odors and pollution from the air, creating a sense of well-being and health in any room.  In a bathroom, white charcoal can control the humidity, in the kitchen it will soak up steam from your stove.

There's also a cube for a fresh fridge and even a tray that absorbs the ethylene gas emitted by fruits to help your fall persimmons last longer.

Since it's essentially carbon, its ashes can return to ashes–a sort of coal stem can be ground up and added to your garden to benefit the soil at the end of its life, au natural.
