Measure twice, cut once.

If your feet are cold, put on a hat.

Sound familiar? You’ve probably heard these classic rules of thumb, and for good reason — they provide great advice in a compact form.

Now there’s a web site that hopes to capture all the best rules of thumb in an easily searchable database: rulesofthumb.org. It makes for addictive browsing, covering hundreds of topics. For example:

  • For marketing purposes, elderly people think they are 15 years younger than they actually are.
  • When playing blackjack, assume that any unseen card is an 8.
  • The heavier the traffic, the less you gain by changing lanes.

Have any good rules of thumb of your own? Be sure to contribute to their rapidly growing database.
