Bat

Got mosquitoes? One little bat can munch hundreds of mosquitoes and like-sized insects in just one hour (NWF). Caped crusaders indeed.

So, if you can get past any creepiness real, live bats may induce and install a house for them in your backyard, you may just be able to skip the bug spray (and worry less about West Nile Virus). The fewer the trees, the fewer the bats (no, they don’t only live in caves), so providing them a home could entice them to make your neighborhood their favorite haunt to sleep and rear young. Just make sure to put your bat house high up on a tree, pole, or garage, and far enough away that you won’t come in contact with any bat droppings.

Sure, you could buy one, but why not build one yourself–the perfect summer weekend project.

Check out a simple bat house design at The Organization for Bat Conservation. If you make one now, by next summer you may not be swimming in mosquitoes and gnats at barbecues.
