15 ways to avoid the freshman 15

School
We all hear about it. We all tell ourselves, "It won't happen to me!" Yet, only those who either are gifted with a high metabolism or follow the tips below will inevitably thwart the dreaded Freshman 15. (HINT: These tips can be applied for those stuck in desk jobs as well!)

  1. Don't drastically change your diet. It's easy to go from decently healthy home meals to fast food, delivery and frozen dinners. If you're in a rush, opt for something healthy as well as quick. E.g. If ordering Chinese delivery, go with steamed chicken and broccoli with brown rice rather than the sauce-drenched, deep-fried sesame chicken with starchy white rice.
  2. Keep or develop a workout plan. When a new schedule (class, job, etc.) comes into the picture, it's easy to skip a workout here and there, or think to yourself, "I don't have time." In truth, if you simply integrate a quick workout into your routine (e.g. a 20-minute jog every morning), you automatically set yourself up to continuing a healthy lifestyle conducive with all the other stuff on your calendar.
  3. Keep a power bar or healthy snacks on hand. Instead of having to make do with all the packets of crackers, chips, candy, etc. in most snack bars, you can have an apple or meal replacement bar to keep your cravings at bay and your blood sugar balanced.
  4. Stay generally active! When someone asks if you want to play ultimate frisbee in the quad, take them up on the offer! Even if you can't play, you'll at least get outside a bit and socialize. Talking burns calories, too!
  5. Have fun, but don't go overboard. Alcohol is a waste of calories. Also, if/when hungover, your body becomes hypoglycemic, forcing you to crave carbs/sugar to keep your body functioning. Remember: a single light beer averages an extra 100 calories. That's a mile on the treadmill!
  6. Don't stress out! Cortisol, a hormone released when people are stressed out, bloats up your midsection. So, keep up with your classes rather than waiting until the night before to cram. Your ab flab (or, hopefully, lack thereof) will thank you!
  7. Take breaks! When you're committing to long study hours or sitting at a desk from 9 to 5, you're truly at your lowest calorie-burning state. Every now and again, get some coffee or water. Stand up and stretch. Do a few push-ups. This also helps out your concentration in the long run, since the best way to study is to do so for an hour, then take a short break, then repeat.
  8. Be social! As mentioned above, talking burns calories! Interacting with other people in general automatically makes us more active, our bodies less relaxed. Even if opting for a night of video gaming, invite a few friends over and chit-chat or high-five while you blow other people up.
  9. Free food is great, but don't overstuff! At the beginning of the school year, many clubs and such will hold meetings with free food to entice you to their introductions. Go ahead and partake, but remember that you're not a bear hibernating for winter! This is a time of plenty. Eat what you want, but don't feel pressured to scarf as much as you can just because you aren't paying for it. At the very least, eat a little, then grab what you can to take back to the dorm for later.
  10. Beware of those lattes! Granted, we're a nation of brewheads. However, opt for an espresso or coffee instead of a frozen vanilla caramel mochaccino with whipped cream. You could be saving yourself as many as 500 calories! If you *must* have flavor to bear coffee, ask for sugarfree versions. A single flavor shot can have as much as 80 calories!
  11. When taking necessary breaks, don't take unnecessary snacks! A cookie here, a handful of M&Ms there out of sheer boredom will add up fast. If you're not truly craving it, there's no need for it. If you find yourself wandering over the the fridge simply because you want a temporary distraction, get online and surf the Internet instead. Or go down the hall (or to the next cubicle) and visit with a friend for a minute.
  12. Don't be afraid of naps. You actually burn more calories sleeping than you do slumped watching the TV. If you're feeling rundown, take a catnap (recommended time is 20 minutes). You might feel energized afterward for a workout, a night out with friends or more studying. This can also help with stress (see #6).
  13. Minimize late night snacking. If you know you're going to sleep in the next hour or so, forego the urge to order a pizza or make a burrito run.
  14. Stay hydrated! Many times when we feel hungry, it's actually that we're just dehydrated and craving water. Keep a bottle handy at all times.
  15. Why ride when you can bike or walk? Get up an extra five minutes early and walk or bike to class rather than riding a car. Actually, often, the latter could be more hasselsome once you consider having to find a nearby parking spot.

on the road: playlist for your car trip

Road_trip_playlist
Whether on a road trip for Labor Day weekend or just cruising along, this playlist is sure to get you doing one of the following: soul searching, mind wandering, head bobbing, lips synching, arms flailing, cheeks red with embarassment when you look over to the car next to you and the driver is staring at you, amused at your antics. Another good reference for compiling a road trip playlist is Rolling Stone's list of the top 25 road trip songs ever. Their list is mainly classic rock, while our list is a bit more ecclectic...

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
Pat Benetar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Bon Jovi - Livin On a Prayer
Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
Baba O'Reilly - The Who
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
Blind Melon - Soup
Gypsy Kings - El Verano
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
The Flys - Got You Where I Want You
Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name
Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
Sparta - Cataract
Shiny Toy Guns - Starts With One
Stone Temple Pilots - Big Empty
Foo Fighters - Times Like These
The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
The Cure - Mint Car
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Angels and Airwaves - Do It For Me Now
Weezer - Island in the Sun
The Rentals - The Love I'm Searching For
Plastic Bertrand - Ça plane pour moi
The Fratellis - Flathead
Gwen Stefani - Danger Zone
Placebo - Every You Every Me
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
The Refreshments - Banditos
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun

Of course, everyone has their own taste, and every road trip has a different vibe. Share your road trip favorites, whether from a past journey or present to-drive-to tunes!

enter: VoIP! sorry, telecomms.

Voip
Voiceover Internet Protocol (a.k.a. VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone, Voiceover Broadband) "is a routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network." Basically, VoIP services (e.g. BroadVoice and speakeasy) allow you to combine your Internet and land line bills into one, inevitably saving you some money. Other VoIP benefits include clearer calls, better basic services (unlimited U.S./Canadian calls, voicemail, number portability, three-way, forwarding, etc.) and cool enhanced features (video calling, online call logs, contact directory, etc.).

how to compose a photo

Photos
With school starting, there should be plenty of photo opportunities: post-summer reunions with friends, moving into a new place, taking a final trip before getting back to the grindstone. We love Kodak's website for its myriad of excellent tips on taking a good/interesting photo. Considering most photos nowadays tend to show up on friends' MySpace and facebook pages, one should be wary when taking a picture. A few tips are below.

  1. Try different orientations when shooting. It's amazing how different of an effect one can get by simply going from vertical to horizontal or vice versa.
  2. Be sure to figure out your main point of interest. Eliminate unimportant elements by zooming.
  3. Follow the rule of thirds. Imagine a tick-tack-toe grid over your viewfinder or camera screen. Avoid putting your subject in the center square for a more interesting, aesthetically pleasing shot.
  4. Utilize leading lines! Choose an angle where natural lines in the composition "point" toward the subject. A good example can be viewed here.

Follow these tips and before you know it, you'll be taking photos worthy of your primary profile pic! (Or, at the very least, a more exciting album for your friends to peruse.)

what does that "SO COOL" license plate do?

Plate1
In the 1987 movie "Adventures in Babysitting", Chris (Elisabeth Shue) realized she was being two-timed by her boyfriend, Mike (Bradley Whitford), thanks to spotting his personalized license plate "SO COOL" in front of a restaurant. Ever wonder what good a personalized license plate does other than cater to an individualized statement (or help discover unfaithful significant others)? As it turns out, many states (California included) use the funds collected from personalized license plate fees to go towards the environment and other state causes! One can also choose from cause-specific license plates for anything from helping fund Olympic Training Centers to Veterans' Organizations to Arts Councils to Coastal Commissions. An example of California's special interest plates can be found by clicking here. Other staters should check with their local DMV's website to see what their offerings include.

flattering ways to wear a tunic

Tunic3_copyTunic2 Tunic1
No, you're not pregnant. No, your girlfriend hasn't gained a few extra pounds and is desperate to hide them. In all actuality, the tunic has been a staple of fashion for the past year or so. Its popularity has been steady in a large part by its versatility (and, admittedly, all the celebs sporting them due to pregnancy). Who knew maternity garb could be so Vogue? But, beware! It can be a disaster if worn without taste! Below are some of our favorite ways to wear the tunic.

  • beach cover-up - Wear a tunic directly over your swimsuit/bikini as an ultra cute and trendy cover-up.
  • with leggings - Pair a tunic with leggings and heels or boots for a hip look. Go with extra layers on top (e.g. longsleeve shirt, scarf) to create that boho chic appearance.
  • with skinny jeans - If you go with this look, be sure that you're either: a) slim in figure (read: smaller in the thigh/rear areas), or b) have a long enough tunic to completely cover your inner thighs and rear to balance out your figure. Another tip: wear fuller knee-high boots to make your thighs appear slimmer.
  • with shorter shorts - The best shorts are actually looser ones of a contrasting color to the tunic. Pair with some cute heels and you're ready to go clubbing comfortably!
  • as a dress - Just be sure that the tunic is a longer one if you choose this route. You don't want to end up looking like you took style tips from Britney Spears, do you?

Bottom line: Don't wear a tunic by itself and expect it to look chic. You've got to wear accessories and play with layers, adding your own individual flair.

the not-so-weary traveler: convenient currency converter

Calculator
We were impressed by the convenience and ease of this pocket-sized international currency and metric converter from Travelwares.com. This sleek and small converter calculates based on exchange rates that you pre-program before beginning your day, thus maintaining the currency of your, well, currency. It also gives you eight different metric conversions (e.g. pounds to kilograms, miles to kilometers).

LCDs are everywhere...literally

Mirror_media1
Multitasking takes on a new form with the latest in LCD (liquid crystal display) screens. Our favorite is the bathroom mirror LCD, where you can go about your grooming routine while conveniently watching your favorite TV program in the lower part of the mirror, thus not having to turn your head this way or that. Another interesting LCD out there is the car rearview mirror LCD. While most of these specialized LCD screens still have relatively hefty price tags, it shouldn't be too long before they are more reasonable. We thought these screens were a neat virtual window shop for Friday. Enjoy!
