With school starting, there should be plenty of photo opportunities: post-summer reunions with friends, moving into a new place, taking a final trip before getting back to the grindstone. We love Kodak’s website for its myriad of excellent tips on taking a good/interesting photo. Considering most photos nowadays tend to show up on friends’ MySpace and facebook pages, one should be wary when taking a picture. A few tips are below.
- Try different orientations when shooting. It’s amazing how different of an effect one can get by simply going from vertical to horizontal or vice versa.
- Be sure to figure out your main point of interest. Eliminate unimportant elements by zooming.
- Follow the rule of thirds. Imagine a tick-tack-toe grid over your viewfinder or camera screen. Avoid putting your subject in the center square for a more interesting, aesthetically pleasing shot.
- Utilize leading lines! Choose an angle where natural lines in the composition "point" toward the subject. A good example can be viewed here.
Follow these tips and before you know it, you’ll be taking photos worthy of your primary profile pic! (Or, at the very least, a more exciting album for your friends to peruse.)
