Sandcastle

Ever wonder how those professional sandcastle builders sculpt so well? Here’s a hint: they don’t just use their fingers! Below are a few helpful tips on how to make an ultra swank sandcastle.

  • Mix your own sand. Consistency is key! Starting with a bucket of water, add sand to it and mix until you can grab a handful, clench your fist, and have it barely hold together.
  • Build a mound, then sculpt it down. Pile your sand mix together and pack it down into a mound slightly larger than the size that you want your sandcastle to ultimately be. This will be your block from which you will chisel out your masterpiece.
  • Use tools! Popsicle sticks smooth and shape. Toothpicks are great for fine detailing (turrets, windowsills, etc.). Paintbrushes smooth walls and gently brush away unevenness.
  • Be patient! A truly great sandcastle takes a lot of time, delicacy and effort. Once you chisel off a bit of sand, you can’t put it back. So take your time and enjoy the process!
