If you love to garden, but your allergies are driving you nuts, try these tips from the UVM Plant and Soil Science Department for allergy-free gardening at home:

  • Avoid gardening in the afternoon in Spring, and early mornings in Fall,
when pollen counts tend to be highest.
  • Keep a set of clothes for gardening only and wash them immediately after working outdoors.
  • Don’t hang dry laundry outdooors during high pollen periods.
  • Wear a baseball cap or sun hat  to keep hair covered.
  • Keep windows closed during, and a few hours after, mowing.
  • Choose low allergen-producing plants: avoid wind-pollinated plants and choose insect-pollinated plants instead (they often have showy flowers).
