Although it is fun to get someone to hold up a heavy, framed piece of art while you stand back and ask them to move it the right, no….to the left a little more, at the end of the day it would be nice to have a rough guide to avoid the most common problem: hanging your art too high.

Here are a few pointers, from the Candadian magazine, Style at Home:

Sofa_2

Above the Sofa:
The frame’s bottom edge should be six to eight inches from the top of the sofa

Cork_2

Avoiding Glare:
Place a small piece of cork between the top of the frame and the wall to prevent glare from obscuring art framed behind glass.

Stairs_1

On Stairs:
Follow the incline of stairs when hanging pictures to create a gallery effect. The bottom of the frame should be centered about 55inches above the stair tread

Group_2

Clustering:
Group similar artwork together and even frame smaller pieces in the same style of mat and frame

Distance_1

Distance:
Remember a bold piece needs more room than a watercolor, drawing, or a black and white photograph

And of course, always use appropriate hardware.
