Consumer Reports, guru of all consumer-related goods and services, lists some great tips for finding a contractor for your home remodeling project.  Now, if only they had a tip for making it possible for every family member to peacefully share one bathroom while the other is being remodeled.

Anyway, here are their 7 helpful hints:

1. Create a planning workbook where you can keep all the information together.
2. Get at least three contractor bids–and remember, lowest isn’t always best.
3. Get at least three references from your contractor.
4. Look for experience and credentials.
5. Check for proper liability insurance.
6. Get an estimate that includes product, material, and labor costs and quantities.
7. Ask for a detailed timetable.
